Melt-blown depth filters are a common type of filter manufactured via a process in which molten polymer / resin is blown at high velocity from an extruder die tip to create fine fibres. Meltblown filters are often confused with spunbonded products that use a different manufacturing process to form coarser fibre filaments. The meltblown manufacturing process is controlled using advanced software programs that can be adjusted to modify the pore structure of the filter. Meltblown filters with a graded density have coarse outer structures with the structure progressively becoming finer towards the core of the filter element.

Common particles removed by depth filtration tend to be hard particulate such as sand and metallic rust.
